Ginninderry to Shepherds Lookout walk (2 versions) – Laurie Westcott

  • Date:

Ginninderry to Shepherds Lookout and Return Outing,

There are two alternative versions of this walk choose from A) or B).

What to see: Perched over the Murrumbidgee River on the edge of Belconnen, Shepherd’s Lookout provides one of Canberra’s best expansive river valley vistas as well as a variety of native vegetation types and wildlife.

Start/finish point:

 A)  Meet at 9.00am at The Link – Ginninderry Community & Information Centre, Pro Hart Ave; Ginninderry ACT.

              B) Meet at 10:00am at the Stockdill Drive end of the Shepherds Lookout Track.

Distance:  A) 7 kms return   B) 1.2 kms return

Duration:  A) 2.5 hours walking + 1 hour looking & photos. B) 45 minutes + 1 hour looking & photos.

Walk difficulty: A) Moderate. Some undulations.  Muddy and uneven sections. Two metal styles for fence crossings. Note: If you were to decide you can’t manage the return walk, there may be space to be driven back with someone doing the B) walk.

   B) On your return you can follow the lower track & if so don’t miss the short path to the fence ahead of you on the right for good views to the south.

Getting there:

A) The starting point is the “Link” or “Ginninderry Community and Information Centre” on the corner of Pro Hart Ave and McClymont Way, Ginninderry. Turn into the car park on your left.  If full, drive past it to the overflow car park – plenty of space

B) The starting point is at the large stones, down-hill on RHS of Stockdill Drive, about 3 kms from beginning of Pro Hart Ave. Coming from the south, north or east, driving along Kingsford-Smith Drive, turn onto Drake-Brockman Drive at Holt and left onto Pro Hart Ave and left again onto Stockdill Drive, noting as you proceed, the entrance to Strathnairn on your right, our coffee spot after the walk.

Bring: Appropriate attire for the day as both tracks are open to the north & west; camera gear (optional to suit your interests, eg, wide lens for landscapes, telephoto for birds/animals, macro for flowers/vegetation); water.

Coffee:  Café Stepping Stone:(www.cafesteppingstone.com) at Strathnairn Arts. Walking access (150m) from the “Link” carpark.  Vehicle access from Stockdill Drive, then Yoornie Way, then Gullifer Street, Ginninnderry, follow the signs.

Please advise me by email care of webmaster@southsidecameraclub.org  if you intend doing the B) walk from Stockdill Drive. Thank you.
