Lake George road trip – Laurie Westcott

Lake George road trip – Laurie Westcott

  • Date:

Sunday 18 April: Meet at the The Lake George Lookout (lakeside of Federal Hwy) at 9:00 am for a departure of 9:15 am. The aim is for a road trip of about 140 kms to visit Lake George and Vineyards.

Recent rains have given Lake George more credibility. Onset of colder weather is likely to add some browns to the lake bed water hues. Depending on the day, the appearance of the surrounding hills (and wind turbines) will change during our stay. Hopefully, further cold temperatures will bring colour to the vineyards and poplars along the lake requiring some stops at the rest areas.
Morning tea will be at Some Place Cafe, Collector around 11:00 am and an opportunity to photograph Collector and its waterways. I’ve planned for a BYO lunch on the escarpment grass verge at the Collector Hang-Glider Launch Area with commanding views of the Collector/Lake George scene. This used to be a Peregrine Falcon hangout. Around 1:30 pm we’ll drive to Gundaroo for photo opportunities and afternoon refreshments here or at the Sutton Bakery.

Expected time home is about 3:30 pm.

Bring your camera gear and tripod, as necessary. Clothing and protective gear to suit the day. BYO lunch and water/tea/coffee/snacks as required. BYO chair, rug for comfort eating lunch if not sitting on the grass.

The sealed road from Collector up the escarpment (5 kms) is impacted by water with potholes and crumbling edges. Care is necessary on winding up-hill section. The 25 kms of unsealed road along the escarpment to Gundaroo is also impacted by water. Some good sections and 2WD is acceptable but care is needed to manage numerous potholes and cuttings across the road. If you don’t have transport or prefer not to drive, please ask around for car sharing with other members or contact me as I may be able to arrange transport for you.
