South Kama Nature Reserve: Laurie Westcott

South Kama Nature Reserve: Laurie Westcott

  • Date:

(This outing replaces the one to Goulburn, which will be rescheduled at a later date)
This Outing will be a morning walk in the South Kama Nature Reserve, on the lower part of the slope to the Molonglo River, down hill from the Pinnacle Nature Reserve  Hawker, Belconnen. Access is via an underpass from a car-park on the up-hill side of William Hovell Drive. I strongly suggest you enter “South Kama Nature Reserve carpark William Hovell Drive” into your smartphone gps app for directions. The carpark is small and unsigned so care is needed.
I’ve attached 2 notes about the Reserve (which include photos, maps and car parking location), for your information. (https://www.weekendnotes.com/kama-nature-reserve-walk/,     https://www.environment.act.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0005/906377/Kama-Nature-Reserve-Self12.pdf)
I found the Reserve allowed a delightful stroll through Yellow Box – Blakelys Red Gum Grassy Woodland along a Dam Walk of 1.9 km or a River Walk of 5.4 km. Both provide great views across to the Brindabellas, of large gnarled old trees, lots of grasses, a dam and plenty of kangaroos. Birds were plentiful on both days I walked the tracks and after recent rain, the slopes are pouring with water so prepare for wet areas and feet.
We will do the 1.9 km Dam Walk which involves going down the slope and back up to the cars. If taken slowly, the slope may be achieved without too much of a challenge. The Dam Walk I did with the camera and plenty of stops and not following the track, took about 90 minutes and there were many occasions I was tempted to stop, watch the birds and kangaroos or take in the views and the surrounding nature. For those interested in nature who might find slopes problematic, there is enough, I think, to keep you with camera interested in the forested and less sloping areas of the top of the Reserve while others complete the Walk.
Walk: 1.9km distance, down and back up the slope.
Meet at Carpark: 9:30 am (Car share preferably as room limited to 5-8 cars. Possible to park alongside the busy William Hovell Drive.)
Refreshments: At Hawker Shops after 11am.
