UPDATE:
The planned outing for shooting the Supermoon on Friday 5 December is at risk because the weather forecast is for a cloudy night.
Instead, the organisers will be going out to shoot the Supermoon on Thursday night, 4 December.
The location is changed too. Please park in the same place as previously advertised by 7:30. Because the moon rises earlier on Thursday than Friday, we need to meet inside the National Arboretum to get the right alignment.
The Arboretum gates are locked at 8:30 pm which is about the same time that the moon will pass behind the the Black Mountain Tower.
Consequently, we need to walk in and out of the Arboretum so we don’t get our cars locked inside.
I have attached a map that shows the parking spot and the rough area of the meeting place. So long as you walk along Forrest Drive past the lake near the Arboretum entrance. It will be easy to identify the right location because you will see other photographers from SCC near the road. It is about a 10 minute walk.
Bring a tripod, your camera, a reasonably long lens, a torch or head torch, and warm clothes because, even in summer, it gets cold when it gets dark.
Lets hope for a cloud free night.
On Friday 5 November another Supermoon is scheduled to rise over Canberra and Geoff Morrison, John Mitchell amongst others have organised to shoot this event as the moon passes the Black Mountain Tower.
The attached document, “Outing – Supermoon rising behind black Mountain Tower (5 December 2025).pdf“. describes all you need to know about preparing for and going to the outing to get photos of the December supermoon.
In summary the instructions are to arrive before 9:00 pm to get set up. The moon will pass behind the tower at about 9:53 pm.
We are meeting at the parking circle where Forest Drive meets Barrenjoey Drive, see attached file “SCC Supermoon Meeting Place.pdf“.
I have inadvertently delayed sending out this invitation and as a result the offer by Geoff Morrison to give instructions on where to go to shoot the moon over the Carillon need to be done by email instead of face to face at last week’s club meeting.
This will be the last outing of the club before the Club Christmas Party on Sunday 7 December near the lake at the National Museum of Australia. More details soon.
As Geoff mentions, shooting a supermoon can produce good images even if we have a bit of cloud on the night.
Hope to see you there.
